Indonesia Military Hands Acid Attack Case Ahead

Indonesia Military Hands Acid Attack Case Ahead

Post by : Shakul

The Indonesian military has moved a step closer to trial proceedings in the acid attack case involving human rights activist Andrie Yunus by handing over the case to military prosecutors.

According to officials, the Indonesian National Armed Forces Military Police Headquarters has completed its investigation and transferred the case files, suspects, and evidence to prosecutors in Jakarta.

Prosecutors will now evaluate whether the case meets both formal and material legal requirements. If deemed complete, the case will proceed to the Jakarta Military Court, where the trial process is expected to begin.

The case involves four active military personnel from the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), who were previously arrested in connection with the acid attack. They face charges of premeditated assault under Indonesian law, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to seven years.

The incident has drawn widespread attention and concern from civil society groups, who have been calling for the case to be handled in a civilian court instead of a military tribunal. Activists argue that a military trial may lack transparency and accountability.

Public protests have also taken place in Jakarta, with demonstrators demanding a thorough and independent investigation into the attack, including identifying any higher-level involvement behind the incident.

Authorities, however, maintain that the investigation has followed legal procedures and that the judicial process will proceed in accordance with existing regulations.

The case remains highly sensitive, as it highlights broader concerns over human rights, military accountability, and the role of armed forces in civilian matters in Indonesia.
