A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Molucca Sea on Thursday morning, triggering small tsunami waves and causing casualties and damage. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers, sending tremors across several coastal regions.
Tsunami waves were recorded shortly after the quake, with heights reaching up to 30 centimeters in parts of West Halmahera and 20 centimeters in Bitung. Indonesia’s Meteorology and disaster agencies confirmed that while the waves were relatively small, coastal communities were urged to remain cautious and avoid shorelines until further notice.
Initial reports indicate that at least one person, a 70-year-old woman in North Sulawesi, lost her life, while another individual was injured. Several homes and buildings sustained light to moderate damage, particularly in Ternate and surrounding areas, as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the destruction.
The quake was followed by at least two aftershocks, though officials said they did not pose further tsunami threats. Indonesia, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences seismic activity, making disaster preparedness a constant priority for the region.
