At least 14 people have died after sudden and powerful flash floods swept through several areas of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The disaster occurred on Siau Island, part of the Siau Tagulandang Biaro administrative region, after intense and persistent rainfall began in the early hours of Monday morning.
According to officials from local rescue and disaster management agencies, continuous heavy rain caused rivers and drainage channels to overflow rapidly. The fast-moving floodwaters surged into nearby residential neighborhoods, damaging houses and sweeping away people who had little time to react. Many residents were reportedly caught off guard as water levels rose sharply within minutes, turning streets into dangerous currents.
Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the affected areas to carry out search, rescue, and evacuation operations. As of Tuesday, 16 trained rescuers remain actively engaged in ongoing efforts, using boats and ground searches to locate survivors. Authorities confirmed that four people are still missing, and search operations are continuing despite difficult terrain, debris-filled waterways, and unstable weather conditions.
In addition to the fatalities, 18 individuals were injured in the flooding incident. The injured victims suffered a range of conditions, from minor injuries to more serious trauma, and are currently receiving medical care at nearby health facilities. Several families have been displaced, prompting officials to establish temporary emergency shelters to provide safety, food, and basic assistance.
Local government teams are also conducting damage assessments to evaluate the impact on homes, roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure. Early reports indicate significant destruction in low-lying areas, though a full assessment is still underway.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone and low-lying regions, to remain vigilant as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of further rainfall. Officials warned that continued rain could increase the risk of additional flash floods and landslides. Disaster response units remain on high alert, closely monitoring the situation across the region and ready to respond if conditions worsen.
