Indonesia and Japan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals and nuclear energy, marking a major step toward improving energy security and supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreement was formalized through a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed by Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ryosei Akazawa during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum in Tokyo.
Focus on Critical Minerals Supply Chain
Indonesia highlighted that the partnership will strengthen the global supply chain for critical minerals used in modern technologies. The country holds some of the world’s largest reserves of nickel along with significant deposits of bauxite, tin, copper, and rare earth elements. These resources are crucial for industries such as electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy systems, and advanced electronics.
Cooperation in Nuclear and Clean Energy
The cooperation will also focus on nuclear energy technology, particularly the development of low-carbon energy solutions with high safety standards. Both countries believe nuclear power can support long-term energy stability while helping reduce carbon emissions as nations move toward cleaner energy systems.
Expanding Regional Energy Partnerships
Officials also discussed expanding collaboration in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal supply chains while accelerating energy transition projects under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) framework. Key projects mentioned include the Sarulla geothermal power plant and the Legok Nangka waste-to-energy plant, which are expected to strengthen regional energy security and deepen strategic ties between Indonesia and Japan.
