Indonesia and Japan are exploring a “sister park” partnership aimed at improving conservation standards and global recognition of national parks. The proposal involves linking Japan’s Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park with several Indonesian parks to exchange expertise and adopt best practices in environmental management.
Indonesia’s Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni discussed the initiative with Japanese officials, including park authorities and representatives from Japan’s environment ministry. The plan is designed to enhance conservation efforts, promote sustainable tourism, and elevate Indonesian parks to world-class standards.
Potential Indonesian parks identified for the partnership include Kerinci Seblat National Park, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, and Mount Rinjani National Park. The collaboration is expected to involve knowledge-sharing, technical cooperation, and joint programs in conservation and ecotourism.
The initiative has been welcomed by Japan, with plans to hold technical workshops to develop a practical framework for implementation. It also complements broader Indonesia–Japan cooperation, including a recently signed agreement on wildlife protection and a Komodo dragon breeding program, highlighting growing environmental and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
