Indonesia has confirmed plans to begin importing crude oil from Russia as part of a broader strategy to strengthen energy security and diversify supply sources. The announcement reflects Jakarta’s efforts to ensure stable fuel availability amid growing domestic demand and global market uncertainties.
Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the agreement was reached following high-level discussions during a recent visit to the Kremlin. He noted that both sides had agreed on the purchase of Russian crude oil, although specific details regarding volumes and pricing have not yet been disclosed.
The minister emphasized that Indonesia currently has sufficient crude oil reserves to meet its needs, but the government is taking proactive steps to secure additional supply options. This approach aims to safeguard energy availability for the population and maintain stability in the domestic market.
In addition to crude oil imports, Indonesia is also exploring opportunities to import liquefied petroleum gas from Russia. Domestic LPG production remains significantly lower than consumption levels, creating a supply gap that is expected to widen in the coming years.
Current estimates indicate that Indonesia produces around 1.6 million tonnes of LPG annually, while demand is projected to reach approximately 10 million tonnes in 2026. The increase is largely driven by industrial usage, which continues to expand alongside economic growth.
The move to import energy resources from Russia highlights Indonesia’s strategy to reduce reliance on limited suppliers and build a more resilient energy system. It also reflects broader global trends where countries are seeking diversified partnerships in response to shifting geopolitical dynamics.
By securing alternative sources of crude oil and LPG, Indonesia aims to strengthen its energy infrastructure, support industrial development, and ensure long-term economic stability while meeting the needs of its growing population.
