The death toll from a school collapse in Indonesia has risen to at least 50 people, officials confirmed on Monday. The tragedy took place at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, leaving the local community in shock. Most of the victims were teenage boys who were attending the school when the building suddenly collapsed.
Rescuers worked tirelessly using excavators and heavy machinery to clear the debris from the collapsed structure. By late Sunday, around 80% of the rubble had been removed. During the rescue operations, teams recovered bodies and body parts of the victims, highlighting the severity of the disaster.
Budi Irawan, deputy at the Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency, confirmed that 50 deaths have been verified based on the bodies recovered so far. He added that rescue teams are continuing the search for 13 more individuals believed to be trapped under the remaining debris.
The collapse has devastated families and the surrounding community. Hundreds of students were inside the building at the time, and emergency responders worked quickly to rescue anyone still alive. Authorities emphasized the importance of strict safety measures in schools to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Although most of the debris has been cleared, search operations continue as rescue teams strive to locate any remaining victims and provide closure for the affected families. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that all survivors are accounted for.
Local authorities have promised support for the affected families, including medical assistance and temporary housing for those displaced by the disaster. The government has also launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse to prevent similar incidents in schools across the country.
The tragedy has drawn international attention, with many expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. The incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for strict building regulations, proper school infrastructure, and emergency preparedness to safeguard students nationwide.
