Indonesia is witnessing a surge in demand for solar energy as global oil and gas shortages, triggered by tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, push consumers and businesses toward alternative energy sources. However, the country’s limited grid infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with this growing interest in renewables.
Industry experts say that while demand for rooftop solar installations is increasing rapidly, many projects are facing delays due to grid limitations. The national electricity network, operated by PLN, is not yet fully equipped to integrate large volumes of distributed solar energy.
Norman Bakhtiar noted that his company has recently seen a rise in new solar project inquiries, particularly since the escalation of global energy tensions earlier this year. He highlighted that this sudden interest reflects a shift in how businesses are approaching energy security.
Many companies are now exploring off-grid solar solutions, which allow them to generate electricity independently of the national grid. While this approach offers energy independence, it comes at a significantly higher cost due to the need for battery storage systems to ensure continuous power supply.
Experts explain that off-grid solar systems are often expensive because solar panels cannot generate electricity at night, making energy storage essential. This increases the overall cost of installation and operation, making it less affordable for widespread adoption.
Despite these challenges, the growing interest in solar energy indicates a broader shift toward renewable solutions in Indonesia. The current energy crisis has highlighted the vulnerabilities of relying heavily on fossil fuels and imported energy sources.
However, without significant investment in grid modernization and infrastructure development, Indonesia may struggle to fully capitalize on the rising demand for renewable energy. Strengthening the grid will be crucial to support long-term energy transition goals and ensure a stable and sustainable power supply.
