Indonesia Tightens Volcano Tourism Safety After Deaths

Indonesia Tightens Volcano Tourism Safety After Deaths

Post by : Shakul

Indonesia has announced stricter monitoring and safety measures for tourism activities around active volcanoes following the tragic deaths of three hikers during the eruption of Mount Dukono in North Maluku. The incident, which claimed the lives of two Singaporean tourists and one Indonesian visitor, has raised serious concerns about visitor safety at volcanic destinations across the country.

The Ministry of Tourism stated that it will strengthen coordination with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and other relevant authorities to improve emergency response systems and ensure quicker action during volcanic incidents. Officials believe stronger cooperation is necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As part of the new measures, authorities will work closely with managers of natural tourist destinations to increase supervision at hiking trail entry points. The goal is to ensure that visitors are not allowed to enter restricted areas whenever a volcano is placed under Level II (Advisory) or Level III (Watch) alert status under Indonesia’s volcanic warning system.

The government will also conduct audits of tour guides operating in volcanic regions. These inspections are intended to verify that guides are following safety regulations and are not allowing tourists to enter hazardous zones for photography, social media content creation, or other activities that could put lives at risk.

Officials described the Mount Dukono incident as a significant setback for Indonesia’s tourism sector. The ministry expressed deep regret over the reported breach of designated danger zones and emphasized that visitor safety must remain the top priority at all tourism destinations.

Indonesia is home to more active volcanoes than any other country in the world and attracts millions of domestic and international visitors each year. While these natural attractions play an important role in tourism, authorities stressed that strict adherence to safety regulations is essential for protecting lives and maintaining public confidence.

The government hopes that enhanced monitoring, stronger enforcement, and better coordination between agencies will reduce risks and create a safer environment for travelers visiting volcanic destinations throughout the country.
