Jakarta – Indonesia continues trade talks with the United States, emphasizing steady progress despite reports of US concerns over commitments made in July. Officials in Jakarta are keen to assure both domestic and international audiences that discussions remain on track and there are no major obstacles. Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Office of the Coordinating Economy Minister, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday that normal dynamics are part of any negotiation and that no specific issues threaten the ongoing talks.
Recent media reports had suggested that frustration in Washington could put the Indonesia-US trade deal at risk, citing alleged backtracking by Jakarta on previously agreed terms. US officials reportedly claim that Indonesia has delayed or reconsidered commitments on eliminating non-tariff barriers affecting American industrial and agricultural exports, as well as on digital trade. Indonesia, however, maintains that it is handling discussions cautiously to ensure that trade agreements respect its sovereignty and comply with existing World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.
Under the July framework agreement, Indonesia had pledged to remove import tariffs on 99 percent of US goods and to purchase approximately $19 billion worth of American products. In return, the US reduced reciprocal tariffs on Indonesian exports from 32 percent to 19 percent, with potential further reductions for commodities not produced domestically. Jakarta is seeking zero tariffs on key products including palm oil, coffee, and downstream mineral products. Coordinating Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia hopes to finalize the deal by the end of this year, and he is expected to meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later this week.
Industry representatives in Indonesia, including Anne Patricia Sutanto of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), emphasize that the deal should focus solely on trade and investment, without being used to impose terms unrelated to commerce. She noted that any request beyond the trade mandate must respect Indonesia’s Constitution and international trade norms, cautioning that rushing the agreement could lead to public and political backlash. Experts, such as Muhammad Habib Abiyan Dzakwan from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), agreed that prudence and patience are essential to protect Indonesia’s economic sovereignty while negotiating with Washington.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto has embarked on a state visit to Russia, shortly after concluding a two-day visit to Pakistan. Arriving in Moscow, Prabowo held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues including energy cooperation, industrial development, agriculture, and military-technical partnerships. Trade between Indonesia and Russia has reportedly grown rapidly by 17 percent this year, and Moscow expressed readiness to provide technical expertise to support Indonesia’s development projects.
Prabowo’s visit to Russia is his third meeting with Putin, underscoring Indonesia’s continued engagement with multiple global partners to advance economic, industrial, and technological cooperation. During the discussions, Prabowo extended an invitation to Putin to visit Indonesia in the near future, while emphasizing that Jakarta seeks balanced partnerships beyond regional powers such as India. The visit follows the recent arrival of Indonesia’s Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Moscow, who secured memorandums of understanding on asbestos-handling training and shipbuilding cooperation.
Indonesia’s diplomatic and trade strategy illustrates a careful balance between deepening economic partnerships with major powers like the US and Russia, while ensuring that national sovereignty, legal frameworks, and long-term strategic interests remain fully protected
