A major scientific study has revealed important new information about whale sharks in Indonesian waters. The research, which was conducted over a period of ten years, has helped scientists better understand how these animals move and where they gather throughout the year.
The study focused on Whale Shark populations in Indonesia, which are among the largest in the world. Researchers used tracking technology to monitor the movements of these animals across wide ocean areas and gain deeper insights into their behavior.
Over the course of the study, around seventy whale sharks were tagged at different locations. Some of these sharks were tracked for up to three years, providing valuable long-term data. Scientists discovered that these animals travel across waters of many countries, showing how wide their migration routes are.
One of the most important findings of the research was the identification of two major hotspots where whale sharks gather throughout the year. These locations are Cenderawasih Bay and Saleh Bay. These bays serve as permanent homes for the species, rather than seasonal gathering points.
Researchers explained that these areas provide ideal conditions for whale sharks. There is a steady supply of food such as small marine organisms, and the environment offers safety from predators. These factors make the bays very important for the survival of the species.
Despite their importance, whale sharks face several threats in these regions. Pollution, increasing tourism, and collisions with boats are major risks. These problems can harm the sharks directly and also damage their natural habitat.
The study also pointed out that human activities like farming and aquaculture can affect water quality. Chemicals and waste entering the sea can create problems for marine life. This may be one of the reasons behind recent cases where whale sharks have been found stranded.
Conservation groups are now working with the government to improve protection in these areas. There are plans to create a special marine protected zone in Saleh Bay to help safeguard whale sharks and reduce human impact.
Experts say that protecting these hotspots is very important for the future of whale sharks. With better conservation efforts and awareness, Indonesia can play a leading role in protecting this unique and endangered species.
