This Friday, the Los Angeles Clippers will head to Dallas to take on the Mavericks in an NBA Cup showdown. Both teams are grappling with serious injury concerns. The Clippers are eager to snap a six-game losing streak, while the Mavericks have started their season with a disappointing 3-9 record, their worst in over five years.
On a challenging seven-game road trip, the Clippers will be without two key players. Guard Bradley Beal has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a serious hip fracture. His absence is notable, as he was anticipated to be a leading scorer this season.
Forward Kawhi Leonard is traveling but is unavailable for this game, sitting out his sixth consecutive match due to a sprained ankle and foot. The absence of Beal and Leonard has made it exceedingly difficult for the Clippers to compete, particularly on the defensive front.
In their last outing, the Clippers fell 130-116 to the Denver Nuggets. They struggled defensively against Nikola Jokic, who delivered a stunning performance with 55 points and 12 rebounds. James Harden led the way for the Clippers with 23 points, while Jordan Miller recorded a career-high 22 points and Ivica Zubac chipped in 18.
Head coach Tyronn Lue emphasized the importance of using the road trip to reset mentally and regain composure. “We've faced some tough patches recently,” Lue said. “Getting back to winning starts with Dallas. It will be a challenge.”
The Mavericks are also dealing with significant injuries, having lost 123-114 to the Phoenix Suns. They played without Kyrie Irving (knee), Anthony Davis (calf), and Dereck Lively II (knee), which has significantly impacted their performance.
Adding to their woes, P.J. Washington Jr. exited the game early with a shoulder strain and is now listed as day-to-day. Coach Jason Kidd noted he was pleased with the team's resilience despite the missing key players.
Klay Thompson had a standout game, scoring a season-high 19 points off the bench. After moving to the Mavericks from Golden State last season, he acknowledged the injury struggles have been ongoing and expressed his eagerness for a fully healthy roster.
In their last season's showdown, the Mavericks lost three out of four matches against the Clippers. This month, Los Angeles has been experimenting with different lineups due to injuries, providing young players like Cam Christie, Kobe Brown, Kobe Sanders, and Jordan Miller with more playing time.
Coach Lue voiced his trust in the young talent, hoping they can continue to develop and contribute positively. He admitted that the team has little room for mistakes amid the ongoing injury crisis, yet he remains confident that the effort from younger players can keep the team competitive.
