Germany faces a significant challenge as young midfielder Lennart Karl has been sidelined for the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to an injury incurred during training. The 18-year-old Bayern Munich talent experienced a muscle bundle tear in his left thigh while preparing with the national team in Chicago.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the unfortunate news just prior to the friendly match against the United States. After undergoing medical evaluation, it was definitively stated that the injury will prevent Karl from participating in the tournament. In light of this, Assan Ouedraogo has been called up as Karl's replacement.
This injury is a considerable disappointment for both Karl and the German team. The promising young player was having a stellar season with Bayern Munich, contributing to the team's domestic double and their run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. His outstanding form secured him a spot in Germany’s squad and established him as one of the nation's most thrilling prospects.
Nagelsmann expressed his dismay regarding Karl's injury, emphasizing sympathy for the young talent. He acknowledged Karl's creativity, speed, and optimistic demeanor, noting that the player had quickly become integral to the squad. The coach referred to the scenario as a significant shock but highlighted that Karl's young age assures many future opportunities in international tournaments.
Nagelsmann also welcomed Ouedraogo to the team, praising him as a gifted player with a promising future ahead. He expressed his hope that Ouedraogo will seize this opportunity and display confidence on the global stage.
Germany arrived in the United States this week to kick off their World Cup preparations, which are set to commence the following week. The four-time champions are eager to move past previous disappointments in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Their last major international win dates back to 2014, when they lifted the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
In Group E of the World Cup, Germany will launch their campaign against Curacao on June 14, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador as they strive for a strong start in their pursuit of a fifth World Cup title.
While the absence of Lennart Karl poses a challenge for Germany, the squad is optimistic that other emerging talents will rise to the occasion and keep their World Cup aspirations alive.
