In a spectacular display, Lionel Messi propelled Inter Miami to a decisive 4-0 victory against FC Cincinnati on Sunday, bringing them closer to their first-ever MLS Cup final. Messi not only netted a goal but also assisted the other three, with Tadeo Allende scoring twice and Mateo Silvetti contributing another. This win paves the way for a showdown with New York City FC next Saturday in the Eastern Conference final.
New York City FC secured their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 win over top-seeded Philadelphia, courtesy of a goal by Maxi Moralez in the 27th minute. Third-seeded Miami entered the match brimming with confidence, showcasing their skill, speed, and precise passing against second-seeded Cincinnati.
Miami's head coach Javier Mascherano commended Messi and the team for their outstanding performance. He remarked, “The players exhibited remarkable character and played a near-perfect match. Managing Leo and this group is a privilege. We know Messi’s capabilities with and without the ball, and he showcased them today.”
The TQL Stadium was filled to capacity as Cincinnati struggled to capitalize on early opportunities. Kevin Denkey forced a save from Miami's goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo early in the game, but Miami was the one to draw first blood. Messi located Silvetti with a pinpoint pass, who reciprocated with a cross that Messi expertly converted with a header, putting Miami ahead 1-0.
Cincinnati almost leveled the score in the 22nd minute, but Ender Echenique's shot went astray. Miami took control thereafter, with Messi coming close to marking two goals shortly after. The turning point arrived in the 57th minute when Messi assisted Silvetti, who fired an exquisite shot into the net, doubling Miami's lead.
With Cincinnati pushing forward, their defense displayed vulnerabilities, allowing Messi to orchestrate the play. In the 62nd minute, Messi set up Allende for the third goal and later assisted him again in the 74th for the fourth, showcasing an exceptional level of teamwork and vision.
This victory moves Inter Miami one step closer to the anticipating MLS Cup final planned for December 6. The champions from both the Eastern and Western Conferences will face off for the title. In the Western bracket, Vancouver is set to meet the winner of Monday's contest between San Diego and Minnesota United.
Messi’s performance once again emphasized his standing as one of the world’s elite players, as he controlled the game’s rhythm, created chances, and exhibited leadership on the pitch. Fans of Inter Miami will be eagerly awaiting the Eastern final, hoping for Messi’s extraordinary influence to steer them towards their inaugural MLS championship.
