Iran Declines to Participate in 2026 World Cup Draw Due to US Visa Rejection

Iran Declines to Participate in 2026 World Cup Draw Due to US Visa Rejection

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In an unexpected twist, Iran has declared its intention to boycott the upcoming 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, as visa complications have barred its officials from traveling to the United States. This announcement was confirmed on Friday by the state-operated IRNA news agency.

Amir-Mahdi Alavi, spokesperson for the Iranian soccer federation, indicated that the delegation encountered visa challenges that “extend beyond sports concerns,” hinting at ongoing political issues.

Expected to lead the delegation was Mehdi Taj—president of the Iranian Football Federation and a key figure in both Asian and global soccer. He would have attended the draw scheduled for December 5 at the Kennedy Center. Taj also plays a crucial role in FIFA committees that oversee competitions and national team soccer.

This situation unfolds against the backdrop of a travel ban imposed by the Trump administration in June, impacting citizens from a dozen countries, including Iran and Haiti. While exemptions have been outlined for athletes and their immediate support teams attending major sporting events like the World Cup or Olympics, it's uncertain whether these apply to the upcoming tournament draw.

This latest development casts a shadow over FIFA’s organization for the inaugural 48-team World Cup set to take place in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Iran's lack of participation in the draw raises questions about the intersection of political and administrative issues with global sports.

FIFA has yet to make a statement on this matter, and the Iranian federation is reportedly seeking to address the issue with the organization.
