Iran Claims US Has Revoked World Cup Tickets for Fans

Iran Claims US Has Revoked World Cup Tickets for Fans

Post by : Shweta

The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) has accused the United States of rescinding the ticket allocation for the country's three group-stage games at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, leading to confusion for many Iranian supporters eager to attend the event.

In a statement released on Tuesday, FFIRI criticized the timing of this decision, which comes just days prior to the commencement of the World Cup, suggesting it is an effort to hinder Iranian fans from experiencing matches featuring their national team.

FIFA regulations stipulate that nations participating in the World Cup are allocated eight percent of the available tickets for each game. It is the responsibility of national associations to distribute those tickets to their supporters through official channels.

FFIRI noted that it had already begun selling tickets as per its allocation and many fans had arranged their travel plans based on these tickets. However, with the sudden withdrawal of this quota, the federation is now unable to provide tickets to its supporters.

FFIRI lamented that this decision contradicts the principles of fairness and equality that should govern international sporting events. The federation has called on FIFA and the event organizers to uphold established regulations and ensure Iranian fans can attend the matches.

As of Tuesday, there has been no official comment from FIFA or the organizers in the US regarding these allegations.

This situation arises amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the US, with Iranian officials highlighting previous struggles related to visas, which have impeded some members of the national World Cup delegation from entering the country.

Iranian authorities mentioned that about 15 delegation members did not receive visas, further complicating the team’s preparations.

Due to these political challenges, Iran adjusted its initial training schedule, relocating from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, close to the US border. The players and support staff successfully obtained visas and reached Mexico on Sunday, in anticipation of the tournament.

Iran's World Cup journey will begin with a match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by games against Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21, and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

This latest conflict underscores how geopolitical tensions can influence international sports events. Even though players have arrived in North America and preparations are underway, uncertainties linger regarding the ability of Iranian fans to attend matches via their federation's ticket provision.

As the tournament approaches, all eyes are on FIFA and the organizers to resolve this issue promptly before Iran's first match. Any decision reached could affect thousands of supporters who have made travel arrangements for the World Cup.
