Iran has announced that it is on the brink of a deal with Oman to create a new maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz. Officials revealed that this route will differ from existing shipping corridors, ensuring consideration for the interests and sovereignty of both nations.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei during an appearance on state television. His remarks coincided with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s affirmation that discussions with Oman are in the concluding phases.
In his televised comments, Baqaei stated that Iran and Oman are approaching a consensus on a maritime route distinct from the typical northern or southern shipping paths currently utilized in the Strait of Hormuz.
He emphasized that the new route will respect the sovereignty of both countries while safeguarding their national security and interests.
Baqaei noted: "We are nearing an agreement on a route that meets both nations' needs—neither the northern nor southern path—but one that honors our sovereign rights and secures our national interests."
Further specifics regarding the exact location or design of the proposed maritime route remain undisclosed by Iranian officials.
Earlier reports from Iran’s state news agency IRNA featured Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that talks with Oman have been advancing effectively and are nearing completion.
Araghchi mentioned that negotiations are "on track for finalization with Oman and are reaching their last phases." However, no additional details were provided regarding the terms of the agreement.
As of the announcement, Oman had not publicly commented on the ongoing discussions.
Baqaei made it clear that the proposed maritime route negotiations are separate from the question of reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
He stated that the understanding reached on the new route is not contingent on whether the crucial waterway is open or closed.
According to Baqaei, the United States is accountable for the current status of the Strait. He accused Washington of breaching its obligations and taking actions that jeopardize Iran.
He explained: "The closure of the Strait is a result of the US violating its commitments, enforcing a naval blockade against Iran, and implementing hostile measures during this period."
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most pivotal maritime channels, with approximately 20% of global oil supply typically passing through this strategic waterway.
Reports indicate that Iran has effectively managed its control over the Strait since the onset of conflict on February 28.
A mid-June agreement between Iran and the United States had aimed to end several months of tensions. It included terms concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the revival of diplomatic discussions aimed at reaching a broader arrangement.
This agreement ultimately fell through as both sides accused each other of violating its stipulations, leading to subsequent US strikes against Iran and retaliatory actions from Tehran throughout the region.
