This week, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will face off in a vital two-leg playoff for a shot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Missing out on automatic qualification, both teams are now aiming for a chance in the intercontinental playoff. The opening match will take place in Abu Dhabi this Thursday, with the return leg scheduled for Basra four days later. The victor of this matchup will edge closer to claiming the last spot in the World Cup to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Both Iraq and UAE previously had opportunities for direct qualification but fell short. Iraq stumbled against Saudi Arabia last month in their bid to reach their first World Cup since 1986. Meanwhile, UAE’s aspirations were thwarted by Qatar, who eliminated them in a crucial qualifying round, making this series of matches pivotal for both nations.
Iraq turns to coach Graham Arnold for guidance and expertise in this decisive moment. The Australian manager, known for leading his home nation to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, brings valuable playoff experience. With confidence, Arnold stated, “We’re doing everything we possibly can for Iraq to make sure we qualify,” emphasizing the team's focus and determination.
Strengthening Iraq's squad is the return of star striker Aymen Hussein from injury, expected to enhance their offensive capabilities. Recent performances have seen Iraq struggle to score, netting only two goals in four qualifying matches, underlining the need for improved attacking efficiency.
Defensively, the team is on an upswing with back-to-back clean sheets against Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, a trend Arnold attributes to the players' discipline and hard work. He noted, “Defensively we did very well; we didn’t concede any goals. However, we must enhance our offensive output moving forward.”
Conversely, the UAE is also regrouping under Romanian coach Cosmin Olaroiu, who has introduced fresh tactics and heightened discipline. Since taking over from Paulo Bento, the Emirati side has improved their goal-scoring record, netting four goals across four matches—still below their expectations.
This playoff isn't just about football; it symbolizes a chance for both nations to reclaim national pride and fulfill dreams long held. Iraq last appeared in the World Cup in 1986, while the UAE's last appearance was in 1990. Both countries have invested heavily in football but have yet to find consistent international success, making this matchup crucial.
Fans from both nations are set to create an electric atmosphere in Abu Dhabi and Basra. The Iraqi Football Federation has indicated a significant increase in ticket sales for the Basra leg, as supporters prepare to cheer for their teams’ return to the global stage. Simultaneously, UAE fans look forward to watching their squad take a significant stride toward global prominence.
The winner from this playoff faces a single-match decider in the intercontinental playoff, paving the way to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will expand to include 48 teams for the first time. This change potentially boosts the chances for Iraq and UAE to return to international competition, heightening the stakes of this playoff.
As both Iraq and UAE prepare to clash, the reality remains that only one will advance. Iraq's return of key players and solid defensive strategies may provide an edge, while UAE aims to leverage tactical changes and better attacking play. Regardless of the outcome, these matches are set to deliver both drama and high-quality football as both nations battle for their World Cup aspirations.
