Iraqi security forces, led by the elite Counter Terrorism Service, carried out a major deployment in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone and areas close to the international airport late on August 6.
The movement included armored vehicles, tanks being transported, and military convoys seen moving through parts of the capital. At the same time, intense aircraft activity was reported over Baghdad and areas of southern Iraq.
The deployment comes amid concerns over possible attacks by Iran-backed militias. There were also fears that such groups could take action against Saudi Arabia.
Open-source monitors posted videos and updates showing the security and military movements. The reports continued into the early hours of August 7.
The deployment is linked to efforts to maintain security and stability in Baghdad as regional conflicts continue. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the movements were intended to strengthen security in the capital and prepare for possible threats.
