On Sunday, Israeli air forces executed airstrikes in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals and injuring 37, as reported by the Lebanese health ministry. These airstrikes occur against the backdrop of escalating tensions despite an existing ceasefire, with civilians increasingly caught in the violence. Among those reported killed were two children and two women, underlining the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the strikes were aimed at Hezbollah-associated positions, including combatants, rocket launchers, and weapon depots. Israeli officials accused Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire and issued warnings of continued military engagement for national security. Residents in various towns outside the designated buffer zone were advised to evacuate north or west to mitigate risk.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the airstrikes, affirming that the safety of the Israeli populace and troops remains paramount. He noted that these operations adhere to agreements made with international allies, even as violence persists on both fronts.
In retaliation, Hezbollah declared its intention to continue targeting Israeli forces, accusing Israel of violating ceasefire agreements. The Iran-supported group expressed distrust in diplomatic solutions and vowed to maintain military actions as long as Israeli strikes persist. Earlier, Hezbollah claimed attacks on Israeli troops and a rescue team within Lebanon, while Israeli reports indicated the death of one soldier and several injuries.
The fragile ceasefire, facilitated with U.S. backing and active since April 16, has minimized large-scale military actions but has not fully eradicated hostilities. Both sides have exchanged accusations of ceasefire violations, with Israeli forces reporting the interception of multiple drones approaching its territory, raising further concerns of escalation.
Since the conflict escalated in early March, there have been significant casualties, with more than 2,500 fatalities reported in Lebanon alone. The ongoing hostilities have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, displaced many civilians, and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict if diplomatic negotiations continue to falter.
