A fresh controversy has emerged in the ongoing Gaza crisis after Israel intercepted another humanitarian flotilla attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. The incident took place in international waters near Greece, raising serious concerns among global observers and aid organisations.
The flotilla, organised by the Global Sumud Flotilla, had departed earlier this month from Barcelona, Spain. It carried humanitarian supplies intended for Palestinians living in Gaza, where conditions remain difficult due to long-standing restrictions and limited access to resources.
According to the organisers, Israeli forces seized the vessels hundreds of miles away from Gaza, near the Mediterranean region close to Crete. They strongly criticised the move, calling it unlawful and describing it as an act that violates international norms governing open waters.
The organisers stated that no country has the right to control or enforce authority in international waters. They argued that the interception represents an expansion of control beyond national borders and sets a troubling precedent for maritime operations in global waters.
On the other hand, Israeli officials defended their actions. Israel’s representative to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said the flotilla was stopped before reaching Israeli-controlled areas. He added that the military acted professionally and responsibly in handling the situation.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. A previous flotilla organised by the same group was stopped last year. During that operation, several participants, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, were detained, drawing widespread international attention and debate.
Israel maintains strict control over access to the Gaza Strip, citing security concerns. The government has repeatedly stated that it does not block essential supplies and allows aid to enter through regulated channels.
However, humanitarian organisations and Palestinian representatives argue that the aid reaching Gaza is still not sufficient. They say that despite agreements aimed at increasing the flow of supplies, the situation on the ground remains challenging for millions of residents.
The latest interception has once again intensified global discussions around humanitarian access, international law, and the ongoing conflict in the region. Observers believe that such incidents could further increase tensions unless a broader and more stable solution is achieved.
