Israel Warns Gaza City Will Be Destroyed if Hamas Refuses Terms

Israel Warns Gaza City Will Be Destroyed if Hamas Refuses Terms

Post by : Maya Rahman

On Friday, August 22, 2025, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, gave a very strong warning to Hamas. He said that if Hamas did not agree to Israel’s demands, Gaza City could face serious destruction. Katz’s demands included the disarmament of Hamas, the release of all remaining hostages in Gaza, and the end of the war on Israel’s terms. He compared Gaza City’s possible fate to the earlier destruction of Rafah and Beit Hanoun, two cities that were largely destroyed during previous Israeli military operations.

Katz posted on social media, saying, “Soon, the gates of hell will open upon the heads of Hamas’s murderers and rapists in Gaza — until they agree to Israel’s conditions for ending the war, primarily the release of all hostages and their disarmament.” He added that if Hamas did not comply, Gaza, the capital of Hamas, would face destruction similar to those two cities.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Position

Earlier, on Thursday, August 21, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel would take strong military action to regain control of Gaza City. Netanyahu stated that Israel’s main goals were to defeat Hamas and secure the release of all hostages. He said these two objectives were closely connected.

Netanyahu announced immediate negotiations to try to free all remaining hostages in Gaza. He emphasized that these talks would happen alongside Israel’s military operation to take control of Gaza City. However, he did not provide detailed information about what exactly the negotiations would include or how the operation would be carried out.

Military Preparations for Gaza City

The Israeli Defence Ministry has called up around 60,000 reservists to prepare for the military operation in Gaza City. These reservists are expected to help in the offensive aimed at Hamas. Israeli military forces have already started positioning themselves around Gaza City, and they have issued evacuation orders for civilians living in some areas.

The military plan includes attacking Hamas strongholds and infrastructure. Israel says the operation is necessary to dismantle Hamas’s military power and secure the release of all hostages. This escalation of military actions has caused concern among the international community and has also led to protests within Israel.

The Hostage Issue

One of Israel’s main concerns is the release of hostages held by Hamas. Hamas currently holds dozens of people in Gaza, and Israel wants all of them released immediately. Earlier this week, Hamas accepted a ceasefire proposal that included a plan for staggered releases of hostages. However, Israel has refused any deal that does not involve the immediate release of all hostages at once.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “These two matters — defeating Hamas and releasing all our hostages — go hand in hand.” Israel is insisting that the release of hostages is a top priority, and any negotiations must include this condition.

Ceasefire Proposal and Negotiations

Mediators, including Qatar and Egypt, have been trying to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Hamas has agreed to a proposal that suggests gradual release of hostages and other conditions to reduce the fighting. Israel, however, has not given an official response to this latest proposal. Israel insists that all hostages must be freed at once and Hamas must disarm before any ceasefire can take place.

The negotiations have been slow and difficult. International mediators are pushing both sides to reach an agreement quickly to prevent further loss of life. The difference between Israel’s demand for all hostages at once and Hamas’s plan for staggered release remains a key obstacle in these talks.

Humanitarian Concerns in Gaza

The situation in Gaza has raised serious humanitarian concerns. The United Nations has declared a famine in Gaza because of the ongoing conflict and blockade. Humanitarian organizations have warned that many people, including children, are at risk of starvation and severe suffering.

Israel has denied that there is a famine, and officials claim that some reports are not accurate. Despite this, international aid agencies are calling for immediate access to food, water, and medical supplies in Gaza. The civilian population is caught between the military actions of Israel and Hamas’s armed operations, leading to a worsening humanitarian crisis.

International Reactions

The escalation of the conflict has drawn attention and concern from countries around the world. Many governments and international organizations have urged both sides to stop the fighting and protect civilians. There are calls for diplomacy and peaceful negotiations to avoid further casualties.

Within Israel, there is also domestic opposition to the war. Some groups, including ultra-Orthodox communities, have protested against military service. Families of hostages have demanded immediate action to secure the release of their loved ones. The political and social tension inside Israel is increasing as the situation in Gaza intensifies.

Possible Consequences of Military Action

If Israel goes ahead with its plan to take control of Gaza City, there could be significant consequences. Gaza City is densely populated, and an extensive military offensive could lead to large numbers of civilian casualties. Destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure is also likely, similar to what happened in Rafah and Beit Hanoun in the past.

International observers warn that a full-scale attack could escalate the conflict further, potentially leading to wider regional instability. Humanitarian agencies emphasize the importance of ensuring safe passage for civilians and providing food, water, and medical care during any military operations.

The coming days are crucial for Gaza and Israel. Diplomatic efforts continue, but the gap between the demands of Israel and the offers of Hamas remains large. If no agreement is reached, Israel may proceed with its planned military offensive, which could have devastating consequences for the civilian population in Gaza.

At the same time, the international community is closely monitoring the situation. Governments, United Nations agencies, and humanitarian organizations are urging calm and immediate action to protect civilians and provide aid. The release of hostages, disarmament of Hamas, and protection of Gaza’s residents remain the most urgent issues.
