Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, made a strong statement today about the role of the country’s military in the ongoing war in Gaza. He said that while the Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has every right to share his opinion, the final decisions will be taken by the government, and the army must follow them.
In a post shared on social media, the Defence Minister said that it is both a right and a duty for the army’s top leader to speak up in the proper meetings. However, once a decision is made by the political leadership, the army must carry it out without hesitation.
“It is the right and duty of the Chief of Staff to express his position in the appropriate forums,” Katz wrote.
“But after decisions are made by the political leadership, the army will execute them with determination and professionalism.”
A Delicate Balance Between Army and Politics
This statement came after some reports hinted at differences of opinion between military leaders and the government over how to handle the war in Gaza. The Defence Minister’s comments make it clear that while military leaders can advise and discuss, the final word belongs to the elected officials.
Katz also emphasized his role as Defence Minister. He said that he is responsible for the army on behalf of the government, and he must ensure that all government decisions are carried out completely.
“As the Defence Minister responsible for the army on behalf of the government, I must ensure that these decisions are carried out—and so it will be,” he added.
The Chain of Command: How it Works
In Israel, as in many democratic countries, the military does not make political decisions. That power lies with the government, led by elected officials.
However, top military officials like the Chief of Staff play an important advisory role. They are expected to provide expert advice on security matters, strategies, and risks. They share their views during high-level meetings, but do not make the final call.
Once the decision is made by the political leadership, the army must follow the orders and put the plans into action.
Current Situation in Gaza
The statement comes at a time when the fighting in Gaza is still ongoing. The Israeli army is continuing its operations to stop attacks and weaken armed groups.
The war has caused many challenges for both soldiers and civilians. While the army works on the ground, government leaders continue to decide the bigger strategy—like how long to fight, when to pause, and what the goals should be.
In this environment, different opinions may come up. Military officers may want one approach, while politicians may choose another. Katz’s message is meant to show unity and remind everyone that the army must act on the government’s orders.
Leadership During War: Clear Messages Matter
In times of war, clear communication between military and political leaders is very important. Any confusion can lead to mistakes, delays, or even loss of lives.
By speaking publicly, Defence Minister Katz wanted to:
This statement helps to maintain confidence in the leadership at a time when the public is worried about the safety of the nation.
What's Next?
As the war continues, more decisions will need to be made. The Defence Ministry, the army, and the entire Israeli government will have to work closely to make sure their plans are successful.
Military leaders will continue to provide expert advice, but final actions will always be guided by political decisions.
This system ensures that the country’s democratic structure remains strong, even during times of war.
