Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after treatment for a spleen injury suffered during the third ODI against Australia.
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has left a Sydney hospital following recovery from a spleen injury he sustained during India’s third ODI with Australia last Saturday. The setback happened when Iyer tumbled attempting a tough catch to dismiss Alex Carey at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
After completing the acrobatic catch, Iyer was seen clutching his side and grimacing from pain. The discomfort forced him off the field immediately. On-site medical staff assessed him and arranged for his admission to a local hospital for further evaluation. Tests later revealed a lacerated spleen caused by the impact of the fall.
Per the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer underwent a minor procedure to control internal bleeding. Sydney specialists kept him under close observation and provided the necessary care. The BCCI confirmed he is stable and “recovering well” following treatment.
In an official release, the BCCI welcomed Iyer’s progress and thanked the treating team. “The BCCI medical team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the statement said, also acknowledging Dr. Koroush Haghighi and his Sydney team, plus Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala from India for their guidance.
Although discharged, Iyer will stay in Sydney for several days for follow-up checks and routine monitoring. Doctors will track his recovery and decide when it is safe for him to travel back to India. He will only return home once medical clearance confirms it is safe to fly.
Before the injury, Shreyas Iyer had been making an impact in India’s ODI series, including a composed 61 in the second ODI at Adelaide. In the third ODI, India beat Australia by nine wickets; Iyer’s fielding contribution preceded the unfortunate incident.
Iyer was not chosen for India’s T20 squad for the subsequent five-match series against Australia. The Indian side, led by Suryakumar Yadav, trails 1-0 in the T20I series after a four-wicket loss in Melbourne. The third T20I is set for Sunday at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
The India–Australia T20I schedule continues with fixtures on November 2, 6, and 8 at Hobart, the Gold Coast, and Brisbane respectively. The series offers both teams a chance to experiment ahead of next year’s ICC T20 World Cup. While Iyer’s absence is notable, his recovery remains the priority for team management and supporters.
Teammates and fans expressed relief at news of Iyer’s discharge, flooding social media with messages of support. His composed batting and reliable fielding have won him many admirers, and supporters are eager for his return.
The BCCI reiterated its commitment to player welfare, stressing no athlete will be rushed back before full recovery. “The wellbeing of our cricketers is our foremost concern. We will ensure that Shreyas returns only when he is completely fit,” the statement added.
While a firm timeline for Iyer’s return is not set, medical staff say he could resume training within weeks if recovery proceeds well. Participation in upcoming domestic and international fixtures will depend on medical clearance, with the team optimistic about a strong comeback after rest and rehabilitation.
Iyer’s injury highlighted the physical risks players face in elite cricket, but his swift recovery and expert medical care underline the value of professional support and player safety. Fans will be hoping to see him back in India colours soon, bringing the same grit and composure he’s known for.
