A major landfill fire near Jakarta has been completely extinguished after burning for more than one week. The blaze at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang began on June 30 and forced local authorities to declare a two-week emergency due to heavy smoke and public health concerns.
More than 230 residents who had been evacuated during the emergency have now safely returned to their homes. Officials confirmed that firefighters successfully brought the fire under control before continuing cooling operations to prevent the flames from reigniting.

The prolonged fire caused thick smoke to spread across nearby communities. Authorities reported 331 cases of acute respiratory illness linked to the smoke exposure. Fortunately, no patients required hospital admission, and most experienced only mild symptoms.
Although the fire has been extinguished, emergency crews remain at the landfill to carry out intensive cooling work. Disaster management officials said teams are ensuring that every part of the burned site is fully soaked to eliminate any remaining hotspots.
Despite the large amount of smoke and ongoing helicopter water-bombing operations, flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport continued without disruption. Authorities monitored air quality and aviation safety throughout the emergency period.
Indonesia's Environment Ministry has announced an investigation into the cause of the landfill fire. Officials will determine whether natural conditions, human activity, or waste management practices contributed to the incident.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that Indonesia's dry season is expected to be longer and more severe this year because of El Niño conditions. Authorities are urging communities to remain alert as wildfire risks continue to increase across the country.
