In a spectacular Italian adventure, Jamie Vardy marked his first Serie A brace, leading Cremonese to a thrilling 3-1 victory against Bologna.
The veteran striker, formerly of Leicester City and England, showcased his lethal finishing with two precise strikes, one before and one after the interval, as Cremonese, currently 11th with 17 points, handed Bologna their inaugural home defeat of the season.
Bologna aimed to inch closer to league leaders AC Milan and Napoli but faced a resolute opposition led by the 38-year-old Vardy on a rainy night at the Stadio Renato Dall'ara.
“It felt just like a typical midweek in the UK; maybe we just needed a bit of rain,” Vardy chuckled after putting an end to Cremonese’s three-match losing streak. “The key was getting those three points and continuing our progress. It’s about commitment and giving your all for the club.”
Cremonese surged ahead in the 31st minute thanks to Martin Payero, with Vardy swiftly adding a second just five minutes later with a familiar strike. Although Bologna pulled one back via a stoppage-time penalty by Riccardo Orsolini, Vardy regained a two-goal cushion early in the second half, raising his Cremonese tally to four goals in nine outings.
Coach Davide Nicola heaped praise on Vardy, declaring it a “privilege” to have him in the squad. “Great players are simple to manage; they understand their responsibilities and perform them flawlessly. Vardy’s mentality and spirit greatly enhance our team,” he said.
Vardy joined Cremonese in September on a one-year contract with an opportunity for a second season should the club maintain its Serie A status. The striker has shown eagerness to immerse himself in this new footballing atmosphere, allying himself with Italian billionaire Giovanni Arvedi’s club.
