A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Thursday, shaking several prefectures across the Tohoku region. According to Japanese authorities, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 50 kilometres off the coast of Iwate Prefecture. While the tremors were powerful, officials confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued.
The Japanese government immediately established an emergency response team to monitor the situation and coordinate disaster relief if required.
Aomori Records Strongest Ground Shaking
The earthquake caused severe shaking in Aomori Prefecture, where it reached Level 6+ on Japan's seven-point seismic intensity scale. At this intensity, standing becomes extremely difficult and people often struggle to move without crawling.
Initial reports showed minor structural damage, including the collapse of a retaining wall, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
Train Services Suspended for Safety Checks
Following the earthquake, East Japan Railway (JR East) temporarily suspended parts of the Tohoku Shinkansen and several local railway services to carry out safety inspections. Some expressway sections in Aomori were also temporarily closed while engineers checked roads and bridges for possible damage.
Authorities said transportation services would gradually resume once inspections confirmed public safety.
Nuclear Facilities Report No Problems
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that inspections at major nuclear facilities found no abnormalities following the earthquake. Tohoku Electric Power reported that both the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant and the idle Higashidori Nuclear Plant remained safe and fully secure.
Other nearby nuclear facilities also reported normal operations, easing public concerns following the strong tremor.
Government Continues Emergency Monitoring
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the government remains on high alert and continues collecting information from affected regions. Disaster response agencies have been instructed to remain prepared in case aftershocks occur or additional assistance becomes necessary.
Residents have been advised to stay alert, follow official updates and remain prepared for possible aftershocks.
Japan Remains One of the World's Most Earthquake-Prone Countries
Japan experiences frequent earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. The country accounts for nearly 20 percent of the world's earthquakes measuring magnitude 6 or higher.
The latest quake also serves as a reminder of the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, which triggered one of the world's worst nuclear disasters at Fukushima and caused widespread destruction across northeastern Japan.
