A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northern Japan early Monday, shaking parts of the region but causing no reported damage or casualties. The tremor was felt across several areas, prompting brief concern among residents.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, no tsunami advisory was issued following the earthquake. Authorities confirmed that the situation remains stable and there is no immediate threat to coastal areas.
The quake occurred inland on Hokkaido, approximately 18 kilometers west of the town of Sarabetsu. The United States Geological Survey recorded the depth of the earthquake at about 81 kilometers, indicating a relatively deep seismic event.
Despite the strength of the tremor, there were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries. Local authorities monitored the situation closely and confirmed that infrastructure and public services remained unaffected.
The earthquake comes just a week after a stronger offshore quake raised concerns about a potential megaquake in Japan’s northeastern coastal regions. That earlier event had prompted increased alertness among disaster management agencies.
However, officials clarified that Monday’s earthquake occurred outside the area covered by the megaquake advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that the special alert period will conclude as scheduled.
Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, frequently experiencing earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Preparedness measures and strict building regulations help minimize the impact of such events.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain alert and follow safety guidelines, although the latest quake did not result in any serious consequences.
