Japan has recorded its lowest-ever greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal year 2024, marking a significant milestone in its climate efforts. According to government data, emissions fell by 1.9% compared to the previous year, continuing a steady downward trend.
Total greenhouse gas emissions stood at 1.046 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, down from 1.067 billion tons a year earlier. This marks the third consecutive annual decline and the lowest level since records began in 1990.
The reduction was driven largely by decreased energy use in manufacturing sectors and a growing shift toward cleaner energy sources. Increased adoption of renewable energy and the gradual return of nuclear power contributed significantly to the decline.
Sector-wise data showed that industrial emissions dropped by 2.5%, while emissions from households fell by 0.7%. The transportation sector also recorded a 1.6% decrease, although emissions from commercial and service sectors saw a slight increase.
Japan has set an ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 46% from 2013 levels by 2030. The latest figures show that emissions have already fallen by 24.9% compared to 2013, indicating steady progress toward this goal.
The country’s energy mix is also evolving, with renewable energy accounting for 23.1% of electricity generation, while nuclear energy contributed 9.4%. Meanwhile, reliance on thermal power declined, though it still remains a major energy source.
Experts note that Japan’s emissions had surged after the 2011 Fukushima disaster due to increased fossil fuel use. However, the recent shift toward cleaner energy highlights the country’s renewed commitment to sustainability and long-term climate goals.
