A large forest fire in Otsuchi, located in Iwate Prefecture, has entered its seventh day, with authorities finally reporting progress in controlling the blaze. The fire has been one of the most serious environmental incidents in the region in recent years.
Officials confirmed that the fire has burned approximately 1,633 hectares of land so far. This makes it one of the largest forest fires in Japan in decades, highlighting the scale and intensity of the disaster.
The wildfire began earlier in the week and spread rapidly due to dry conditions and environmental factors. Firefighters and emergency teams have been working continuously to contain the flames and prevent further damage to nearby areas.
According to local authorities, the situation has started to improve, and efforts to control the fire are showing positive results. Although the fire has not yet been fully contained, officials believe that the worst phase may be over.
Evacuation orders that were previously issued for several areas have now been lifted in most parts of the town. Authorities stated that the decision was made after assessing that there is no longer an immediate threat to residents.
Despite this progress, officials have not provided a clear timeline for complete containment of the fire. Fire crews remain on alert and continue to monitor the situation closely to avoid any possible flare ups.
This fire is reported to be the second largest in Japan since 1989. It follows another major wildfire that occurred last year in a nearby area, which also caused significant environmental damage.
Experts say that changing weather patterns and dry conditions may increase the risk of such fires in the future. This has raised concerns about the need for better preparedness and stronger response systems.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow official instructions. Efforts are ongoing to fully control the fire and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
