Two workers who had safely evacuated an Aeon shopping mall during a powerful earthquake in Japan were later killed in an explosion after returning to the building on instructions from their employer to secure cash.
The incident has drawn attention to workplace safety during natural disasters and raised questions about decisions made in emergency situations.
According to reports, the two workers were among those who successfully left the shopping mall after the earthquake struck. The evacuation was carried out as a safety measure following the powerful tremor.
However, after reaching safety, the employees were instructed to re-enter the building to secure cash from the business. The workers returned to the premises before an explosion occurred inside the mall.
Both employees were killed in the blast.
The company involved later acknowledged that asking the workers to return to the building was a mistake.
In a public apology, the company described the decision as "inappropriate" and expressed regret over the incident.
The admission has become a key focus of discussions surrounding the tragedy, particularly regarding employer responsibilities during emergency situations.
The deaths have sparked renewed scrutiny of workplace safety practices during disasters. The incident has highlighted the difficult choices employees may face when businesses attempt to protect property or assets while safety risks remain uncertain.
Experts and observers have pointed to the importance of prioritizing human safety during emergencies, especially following major natural disasters such as earthquakes.
The fatal explosion and the circumstances surrounding the workers' return to the building have generated widespread attention in Japan and beyond.
As investigations and reviews continue, the case is expected to remain part of broader discussions about disaster response procedures, employee protection, and workplace decision-making during emergencies.
