Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is reportedly considering calling an early parliamentary election in February, aiming to strengthen her political position while public support remains strong. Sources indicate that February 8 or February 15 are being discussed as possible voting dates.
Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister in October, has seen a rise in popularity due to her firm national security stance. Her strong views on regional security, particularly regarding China and Taiwan, have resonated with conservative voters across the country.
Currently, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is governing in coalition with the right-leaning Ishin party. However, the alliance is still a few seats short of securing a clear majority in the lower house of parliament. A snap election could help the coalition gain the numbers needed to govern more comfortably.
Relations between Japan and China have significantly worsened in recent months. Tensions escalated after Takaichi stated that any potential military action by China against Taiwan would pose a serious threat to Japan’s security. Beijing reacted sharply to the remarks, leading to diplomatic friction between the two nations.
Following the comments, China advised its citizens against traveling to Japan, suspended official exchanges, and restricted exports of certain items that could have military applications. These steps marked one of the most serious diplomatic confrontations between the two countries in over a decade.
The possibility of early elections also had an immediate impact on financial markets, with the Japanese yen weakening against the US dollar after reports surfaced.
If the election is called, it could shape Japan’s political direction at a time of rising regional tensions and growing global attention on East Asia.
