In a surprising and lighthearted moment during their recent summit, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung shared a drum session together, playing along to popular K-pop songs. The brief but memorable jam session, released by the Japanese Prime Minister’s office, showed the two leaders enjoying global hits from famous groups such as BTS and K-pop Demon Hunters.
Prime Minister Takaichi, known for her love of drumming and heavy metal music, praised President Lee for quickly learning the basics. She said that Lee picked up the rhythm in just a few minutes, showcasing the warm and playful spirit between the two leaders. Despite their different tempos and rhythms, both leaders smiled and tried their best to play in sync, symbolizing their hope to build a strong, future-focused partnership between their countries.
President Lee shared his excitement about the moment on social media, expressing optimism about the growing friendship. He wrote that although their drum tempos were a little different, they tried to match each other’s rhythm and pledged to work with “one heart” to create a stronger bond between Japan and South Korea.
This cheerful and unusual interaction comes amid efforts to improve relations between the two countries, which have often been tense in the past. During the summit, Takaichi and Lee also discussed plans to strengthen security and economic cooperation in response to rising regional challenges in East Asia. Their talks emphasized “shuttle diplomacy,” with plans for the Prime Minister to visit South Korea soon to continue dialogue.
In addition to the summit talks, the leaders visited the historic Horyuji Temple in Nara, Japan — the hometown of Prime Minister Takaichi. This cultural visit highlighted the growing friendship and goodwill between the two leaders.
Overall, this drum session was more than just a fun break; it served as a symbolic gesture of unity and cooperation as Japan and South Korea look to improve their relationship and face regional challenges together with renewed energy and hope.
