Japan Uses Robot Wolves for Wildlife Safety

Japan Uses Robot Wolves for Wildlife Safety

Post by : Shakul

A Japanese company producing robotic wolves designed to scare away wild bears is experiencing a sharp rise in demand following a record increase in deadly bear attacks across the country. The unusual technology, called “Monster Wolf,” has become one of the most talked-about wildlife safety solutions in Japan during 2026.

The robotic wolf is developed by Hokkaido-based company Ohta Seiki. The machine is designed to frighten animals using flashing red LED eyes, loud growling sounds, artificial fur, and aggressive movements. The device can also rotate its head from side to side and produce more than 50 different sounds, including human voices, electronic noises, and wolf-like howls that can be heard from nearly one kilometer away.

Company president Yuji Ohta said demand for the product has increased significantly this year. According to the company, around 50 new orders have already been received in 2026, which is normally equal to the company’s annual sales volume. Ohta explained that the devices are handmade, making it difficult for the company to quickly meet rising demand. Customers are currently being asked to wait two to three months for delivery.

The growing interest in robotic wolves comes after Japan recorded a major rise in bear-related incidents. Official data showed that 13 people were killed in bear attacks during the 2025–2026 period, more than double the previous record. Authorities also reported over 50,000 bear sightings nationwide, with wild bears increasingly entering residential neighborhoods, schools, supermarkets, and tourist areas.

The number of bears captured and later culled also reached a record high. Officials confirmed that more than 14,600 bears were removed during the past year, nearly three times higher than previous figures. Northern regions of Japan, especially Hokkaido, have seen a particularly sharp increase in bear activity as animals emerge from hibernation.

Most customers purchasing the Monster Wolf devices include farmers, golf course operators, construction workers, and people working in remote rural areas. Farmers especially believe the devices can help reduce damage to crops and improve safety in farming communities where wildlife encounters have become more common.

The Monster Wolf was first introduced in 2016 mainly to prevent crop damage caused by deer, wild boars, and bears. Initially, many people considered the invention unusual and doubted its effectiveness. However, after several successful cases of reducing wildlife activity, the robot gained popularity and is now seen as a practical safety tool.

The company is currently working on advanced versions of the robotic wolf. Future models may include wheels for movement and patrol functions that allow the robot to actively chase animals away from specific areas. Ohta Seiki is also exploring artificial intelligence camera systems to improve detection and response capabilities.

In addition, the company plans to develop smaller portable versions for hikers, fishermen, and schoolchildren who travel through forested areas. Experts believe such technologies may become increasingly important as human-wildlife conflicts continue to rise in several parts of Japan.

The rising demand for robotic wolves highlights how technology is being used in innovative ways to address public safety and environmental challenges in rural communities.
