President Donald Trump’s Asia visit reached a diplomatic waypoint as Japan announced intentions to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. In Tokyo on Monday, Trump met with newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at Akasaka Palace, where the two leaders formalised a significant agreement on critical minerals and rare earths to deepen economic and strategic cooperation.
A White House statement said Japan plans to put forward Trump’s name in recognition of his recent peace initiatives across Asia and the Middle East. Tokyo has not yet released an official confirmation, but the development would represent further momentum for Trump’s international diplomatic profile.
At their joint session, Prime Minister Takaichi commended Trump for mediating a resolution between Thailand and Cambodia and for helping secure a ceasefire in Gaza. "You succeeded in brokering a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, and your recent Middle East deal is an unprecedented historic achievement," she said.
Long seen as a principal US ally in Asia, Japan stressed the value of close ties with Washington under Trump’s leadership. Officials say the rare-earths and critical minerals pact should strengthen global supply chains for key resources and reduce dependence on rival suppliers.
Support for Trump’s Nobel ambitions has grown recently, with countries including Israel, Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand reported to have submitted nominations citing his peace agreements and diplomatic interventions. Trump has repeatedly styled himself as a "President of Peace," asserting credit for easing several protracted disputes from Gaza to Indo-Pak tensions.
The US president’s Asia tour began in Malaysia, where he attended the ASEAN summit and helped facilitate the Thailand-Cambodia peace accord. After Tokyo, Trump is scheduled to travel to South Korea to take part in the APEC leaders’ meeting.
While in Seoul, Trump is also expected to hold a high-profile bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping — a closely watched encounter amid ongoing US-China trade frictions. Discussions are expected to focus on trade, regional security and measures to stabilise economic relations.
As the tour continues, the mounting nominations underline Trump’s effort to portray US diplomacy through direct engagement and regional peacemaking. Whether these endorsements will translate into a Nobel Prize remains uncertain, but they underscore a concerted push to frame him as a global mediator.
