Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has sent a ritual offering to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, continuing a long-standing tradition that often triggers regional tensions. The move comes during a sensitive time, as historical issues continue to affect relations between Japan and its neighbors.
The Yasukuni Shrine, located in Tokyo, commemorates around 2.5 million war dead, most of them Japanese soldiers who died in conflicts dating back to the late 19th century. However, the shrine also includes senior military and political figures convicted of war crimes during World War II, making it a deeply controversial symbol in East Asia.
According to reports, Takaichi sent a ceremonial “masakaki” tree offering but chose not to visit the shrine in person. This decision reflects a cautious approach often taken by Japanese leaders, who try to balance domestic traditions with international sensitivities.
China and South Korea have repeatedly criticized such gestures, viewing them as a sign that Japan has not fully acknowledged its wartime past. Japan, however, maintains that the offerings are a matter of paying respect to the war dead and are part of its internal cultural and religious practices.
A sitting Japanese prime minister has not visited the shrine since 2013, when Shinzo Abe made a controversial visit that sparked strong diplomatic backlash, including criticism from the United States. Since then, leaders have largely avoided personal visits.
Despite this, former prime ministers such as Fumio Kishida and Shigeru Ishiba have continued the practice of sending ritual offerings during major festivals, keeping the tradition alive without escalating tensions further.
Every year, dozens of Japanese lawmakers and public figures visit the shrine, especially during the spring and autumn festivals and on the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in 1945. The issue continues to underline the complex historical dynamics in East Asia, where memories of past conflicts still shape modern diplomatic relations.
