Josh Naylor, the free agent first baseman, has confirmed his return to the Seattle Mariners with a new five-year deal, as reported by various media outlets on Sunday. While the financial specifics remain undisclosed, the contract will be finalized following Naylor's successful physical examination. His re-signing marks a significant reinforcement for Seattle following a standout performance last season.
At 28 years old, Naylor initially joined the Mariners earlier this year when he was traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks just before the trade deadline. In that exchange, Seattle sent left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and minor league pitcher Ashton Izzi to Arizona. Naylor arrived during a pivotal moment and quickly earned his place as one of the team's most dependable athletes.
During his tenure in the regular season with Seattle, Naylor proved to be a game-changer. Across 54 games, he recorded a batting average of .299, hit nine home runs, and achieved 33 runs batted in (RBIs). With an on-base percentage of .341 and a slugging percentage of .490, Naylor's offensive contributions were vital in aiding Seattle's claim of the American League West division title.
His performance only improved in the postseason, where Naylor batted an impressive .340 across 12 games, hitting three home runs and driving in five RBIs. His on-base percentage soared to .392, and his slugging percentage reached .574, evidence of his crucial role in high-pressure moments.
Despite the Mariners' elimination in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, Naylor's playoff performance solidified his status as a key player in Seattle’s postseason efforts.
Before joining the Mariners, Naylor played 93 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2025, achieving a batting average of .292 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. His base-stealing capability was highlighted by a success rate of 30 steals out of 32 attempts. Notably, he was perfect with the Mariners, successfully stealing 19 bases without a miss.
Throughout his career in Major League Baseball, Naylor has been recognized for his power-hitting and adaptability, boasting a career batting average of .269, complemented by 104 home runs and 435 RBIs in 745 regular-season games. His journey included stints with the San Diego Padres (2019–2020), the Cleveland Guardians (2020–2024), and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2025), alongside earning an American League All-Star nod in 2024.
Naylor's versatility stands out, as he primarily plays first base but has also shown ability in outfield positions and as a designated hitter, enhancing team flexibility based on strategic needs.
Initially drafted 12th overall by the Miami Marlins in 2015, Naylor’s early career saw him traded to the San Diego Padres, and later to the Cleveland Guardians in August 2020. Following a productive tenure in Cleveland, he was traded to Arizona in December 2024 and later found notable success with the Mariners starting July 2025.
With this new five-year deal, Josh Naylor is poised to be a cornerstone of the Mariners' plans, as Seattle anticipates his impactful hitting, postseason acumen, and robust base-running will drive the team’s competitive edge.
