After years of devoted service to the Sri Lankan legal system, Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya officially bid farewell to Supreme Court Judge Justice Murdu Fernando during a special ceremonial sitting held at the Supreme Court complex in Hulftsdorp. This farewell was not just a goodbye to a respected judge, but also a moment to reflect on the values and strength of Sri Lanka's judiciary.

Justice Murdu Fernando retired after serving the country with honesty, dedication, and fairness. Her farewell was attended by judges, senior lawyers, government officers, law students, and others who deeply respected her contributions to the legal field.

Who Is Justice Murdu Fernando?

Justice Murdu Fernando has been a part of the legal system in Sri Lanka for over four decades. She first joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1980. Through hard work and determination, she climbed the ranks, eventually being appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Known for her honesty, calm approach, and deep knowledge of the law, Justice Fernando became a role model for many, especially young female lawyers. Her judgments were known for being fair and well-reasoned. She always stood by the Constitution and never gave in to political or public pressure.

A Trailblazer for Women in Law

One of the most inspiring parts of Justice Murdu Fernando’s journey is how she broke barriers for women in law. When she began her legal career, there were very few women in senior positions. But Justice Fernando proved that women could not only succeed but also lead in the legal profession.
She encouraged young women to pursue legal careers and always supported equal rights and justice. Many young girls who dream of becoming judges or lawyers see her as an example to follow.

What Was Said at Her Farewell Ceremony

During the farewell ceremony, many spoke with deep emotion and respect. Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya said Justice Fernando always performed her duties with courage and independence. He said she had never hesitated to speak her mind when it came to justice and fairness.
He also noted that she remained calm and collected even when she had to deal with controversial or sensitive cases. According to him, she never let pressure affect her decisions. Her loyalty was always to the law and justice.
Other Supreme Court Judges also shared their thoughts. They praised her professionalism and kind nature. They said she always listened carefully during court proceedings and treated everyone with respect, no matter how big or small the case.

Her Contributions to the Judiciary

Justice Murdu Fernando was involved in many important decisions over the years. She handled cases related to human rights, public law, constitutional matters, and criminal justice. Her decisions helped shape the legal system and provided justice to many people.
She was also known for her clear writing style in judgments. Legal experts say that her judgments were easy to understand and based on strong legal principles. She helped develop a deeper understanding of the law for both students and practicing lawyers.

Standing for the Constitution

One of Justice Fernando’s most respected qualities was her firm belief in upholding the Constitution. She believed that no one was above the law, not even powerful politicians or public officials. In many of her judgments, she reminded people that the Constitution is the foundation of the country’s legal system.
She once famously said in a ruling that “the independence of the judiciary is not just a principle to talk about, but a truth that must be protected every day.” Her firm belief in these values helped maintain the strength of Sri Lanka’s legal system.

Her Humble and Kind Nature

While Justice Fernando was respected for her legal mind, she was equally admired for her humble and kind personality. Colleagues remember her as someone who never showed off her position or achievements. She always remained grounded, respectful, and warm towards others.
Young lawyers said she encouraged them without being strict or arrogant. She would often give helpful advice and motivate them to study and work hard.
A court assistant shared how she always greeted everyone with a smile and asked about their well-being, something not often seen from people in high positions.

Justice Beyond the Courtroom

Justice Fernando also contributed to legal education. She gave guest lectures and mentored law students. She believed that teaching future generations about the importance of justice and fairness was part of her duty.
She supported legal reforms and encouraged the use of technology to improve the court system. She believed that justice should not be delayed and that courts should serve people efficiently.

Her Legacy

Justice Murdu Fernando leaves behind a strong and inspiring legacy. Her judgments, her values, and her humble behavior have made a lasting impact on the Sri Lankan legal community.
She showed that being a good judge is not just about knowing the law, but also about having a kind heart, a calm mind, and a strong sense of duty.
Many believe that her retirement is not an end but a new beginning. She has already inspired many, and her story will continue to encourage young people, especially girls, to dream big and work hard.

Words from the Bar Association

Members of the legal profession, including representatives from the Bar Association, also shared their appreciation. They said that Justice Fernando’s honesty and independence were rare qualities. They thanked her for protecting the rights of the people and always being fair in her decisions.
A senior lawyer said, “Justice Fernando never took sides. She was always neutral. When you walked into her courtroom, you knew she would give everyone a fair hearing.”

Final Moments in Court

As the farewell ceremony came to an end, there was a mix of sadness and respect in the courtroom. Many people had tears in their eyes. The Chief Justice and other judges stood up and bowed in honor of Justice Murdu Fernando.
In her final words, Justice Fernando thanked her colleagues, court staff, lawyers, and the people of Sri Lanka. She said she felt honored to have served the country and promised to always support the legal system, even after her retirement.

A Lasting Inspiration

Justice Murdu Fernando’s farewell was not just about saying goodbye. It was a celebration of a life lived in service of justice. Her honesty, wisdom, and courage are reminders of what a true judge should be.
