In an extraordinary feat, West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves carved his name into the annals of cricket history by becoming the first bowler to claim wickets in five consecutive maiden overs during the first Test against Pakistan.
This exceptional performance unfolded on the third day of the World Test Championship match, where Greaves delivered career-best statistics of 5 for 27, giving West Indies a critical advantage.
Pakistan seemed poised for a strong finish, sitting at 244-3 with Shan Masood leading the charge with a score of 109.
Greaves triggered a remarkable collapse by dismissing Masood followed by Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman, and Mohammad Rizwan in four consecutive maiden overs, all without conceding a run.
After the lunch interval, he achieved the historic milestone by taking out Mohammad Abbas, thus becoming the first bowler to secure wickets in five successive maiden overs in Test cricket.
This incredible accomplishment exceeded the previous record of four consecutive wicket maidens set by Stuart Broad during a match against South Africa in Johannesburg back in 2016.
Additionally, this performance marked Greaves' first five-wicket haul in his Test career since debuting.
Following the day's play, Greaves shared that his captain, Roston Chase, encouraged him to stick to disciplined bowling and maintain a consistent line and length.
He remarked on the favorable conditions for bowlers and expressed joy at reaching this significant milestone, while also noting that much work remained in the match.
Pakistan was ultimately bowled out for 282, falling short of West Indies’ first-innings total of 311 by 29 runs.
Even though Pakistan reduced West Indies to 126-7 by the end of the day’s play, the West Indies maintained an overall lead of 155 runs, keeping the first Test highly competitive as it heads into the fourth day.
