His steady performance ensured Kansas State maintained their lead, even as Cal endeavored to narrow the gap. Haggerty’s composed demeanor and accurate shooting were essential to clinching the victory.
Khamari McGriff contributed significantly as well, scoring 21 points and displaying tenacity around the basket. His ability to convert tough chances proved invaluable whenever Cal seemed poised to shift momentum.
Nate Johnson's 20 points were vital during Kansas State's 9-0 run in the second half, which widened their advantage to 24 points, ensuring they remained ahead for most of the match.
Off the bench, David Castillo stole the spotlight, bagging 16 points from the three-point range, connecting on 4 out of 6 attempts. Over his last two games, Castillo has showcased his shooting prowess, hitting 9 of 11 three-pointers, establishing himself as a crucial asset for Kansas State.
Despite Kansas State’s initial control, Cal flipped the script in the second half, outscoring their opponents 62-44. Chris Bell and Dai Dai Ames led Cal's charge, contributing 27 and 25 points, respectively, gradually chipping away at the deficit.
Cal closed the gap to 13 points with about nine minutes remaining, prompting Kansas State to respond with crucial baskets from Johnson. However, Cal didn’t relent, narrowing the margin to just 10 points with three and a half minutes left. Kansas State's attempts to secure the lead were met with fierce resistance from Cal.
In a nail-biting final minute, Cal came even closer with Bell's deep three-pointer, making it 98-92 with 38 seconds left. Haggerty managed to sink one of two free throws, but Cal responded with two late dunks. Ultimately, despite Cal's spirited push, Kansas State held firm to claim a narrow 99-96 victory.
The Wildcats’ initial 13-0 run proved pivotal, propelling them from a 9-5 deficit to an 18-9 lead. With contributions from McGriff, Johnson, and Haggerty, Kansas State established their largest lead of the game at 47-22. This early advantage was crucial in weathering Cal’s late-game comeback.
Kansas State secured a hard-earned 99-96 win, marked by standout performances and thrilling moments. Their strong start and balanced scoring allowed them to withstand Cal’s second-half resurgence, prevailing in an intense nonconference matchup.
