Karan Johar, a prominent filmmaker and the lively host of the hit talk show Koffee With Karan, has clarified why star cricketer Virat Kohli has never appeared on his show.
During an engaging discussion with Sania Mirza, Johar revealed, "I have never asked Virat, and after the incidents involving Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, I’m steering clear of inviting cricketers altogether."
This remark alludes to the notorious 2019 incident where Pandya and Rahul faced backlash for their remarks during their Koffee With Karan appearance. Pandya's comments about women sparked widespread criticism for their sexist tone and inappropriate nature.
His controversial claim suggested he learned to "treat women" by observing "West Indian players and black culture"—a statement that ignited outrage nationwide. The BCCI's Committee of Administrators demanded explanations from both players, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
In the wake of the controversy, Pandya issued a public apology, expressing he got "carried away" during the show. Nonetheless, the repercussions were severe; both players faced a temporary suspension from the BCCI and fines of Rs 20 lakh each for misconduct.
Baring his feelings on the aftermath, Johar stated, "I felt deeply responsible, as it was my platform that hosted the guests, making me accountable for the fallout.” The incident took a toll on him, leading to sleepless nights grappling with how to address the implications.
Since this, Johar has been careful about inviting athletes, particularly cricketers, to his show. This incident has not only altered public perception of celebrity chat shows but also transformed the approach of entertainment platforms regarding sensitive discussions amid increasing social media scrutiny.
Though fans still dream of seeing Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma on the iconic couch, Karan Johar's recent comments indicate he's opting to avoid further controversies, especially concerning cricket icons.
