Kazakhstan has officially begun implementing its new constitution, marking the start of a major political transition under President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Approved through a national referendum in March, the constitution introduces significant institutional reforms aimed at reshaping the country's political system.
Vice President Post and New Parliament Introduced
Under the new constitution, Kazakhstan will create the position of vice president and hold a snap parliamentary election in August to elect a newly restructured and smaller parliament. President Tokayev said the reforms are designed to modernise the country's governance and strengthen the foundations of Kazakhstan's independence.
Why Is Kazakhstan Changing Its Constitution?
The government says the constitutional reforms are intended to improve political institutions, establish a clearer leadership succession process and modernise state administration. The newly created vice president will become the first in line to succeed the president if required under the constitutional framework.
Political Transition Gains Momentum
Political analysts believe the constitutional changes represent an important step in Kazakhstan's long-term political transition. The reforms come as Tokayev continues reshaping the country's political landscape following his public split with former President Nursultan Nazarbayev after the 2022 unrest.
Government Continues Political Reforms
In recent months, Kazakhstan's ruling Amanat party was merged into the Adilet party, which is led by close allies of President Tokayev. The move is widely viewed as part of broader efforts to restructure the country's political institutions and prepare for the next phase of leadership.

What Do the Reforms Mean?
The constitutional changes are expected to influence Kazakhstan's political stability, governance and investment environment. As Central Asia's largest economy and a major oil producer, Kazakhstan's reforms will be closely watched by regional neighbours and international investors interested in the country's future political and economic direction.
