Kazakhstan Releases First Wild Tiger in Over 70 Years

Kazakhstan Releases First Wild Tiger in Over 70 Years

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Kazakhstan has released a female Amur tiger named Umit into the wild at the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve, marking the first time in more than 70 years that a tiger has returned to the country's natural habitat. The release took place on July 31 as part of Kazakhstan's long-term effort to restore the extinct Turan tiger population.

The transport of Umit to Kazakhstan was sponsored by Freedom Holding Corp. The release is considered an important milestone in the country's wildlife restoration programme.

Months of Preparation Before Release

Before being released into the reserve, Umit spent several months in a specially designed enclosure where she adapted to local conditions. During this period, veterinarians regularly examined her health, while wildlife experts assessed her hunting abilities to ensure she could survive independently in the wild.

Officials confirmed that the tiger successfully completed all required evaluations before being approved for release.

GPS Collar Will Track Her Around the Clock

Just before entering the wild, Umit was fitted with a modern GPS-GSM tracking collar. According to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the tiger is now being monitored continuously through the tracking collar, camera traps installed across the reserve, and other modern wildlife monitoring systems.

The monitoring programme will allow specialists to observe her movements and adaptation to the natural environment.

Why Ile-Balkhash Was Chosen

The Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve was selected because it lies within the historical range of the extinct Turan tiger, which once lived in the tugai forests along the Ili River and the Southern Balkhash region.

The Turan tiger disappeared from Kazakhstan during the mid-20th century due to poaching, destruction of forests, and a decline in wild prey populations.

More Than a Decade of Restoration Work

Preparations for bringing tigers back to Kazakhstan took more than 10 years. During that period, authorities established the nature reserve, restored habitats, increased populations of wild ungulates that serve as prey, built special enclosures, and created the infrastructure needed for the reintroduction programme.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said the tiger sits at the top of the food chain and plays a key role in maintaining ecological balance. Officials added that its return represents not only the restoration of a species but also the recovery of the Southern Balkhash ecosystem.

Four Amur Tigers Arrived From Russia

In May 2026, Kazakhstan received four Amur tigers from Russia, including two adults and two cubs, to support the restoration programme.

Scientists selected Amur tigers after genetic studies showed they are nearly identical to the extinct Turan tiger, making them suitable for rebuilding the population in Kazakhstan.

Other Tigers Still Under Observation

While Umit has been released, the adult male tiger remains inside the enclosure, where specialists continue to monitor his behaviour before deciding when he can enter the wild.

The two cubs are also still under supervision and will only be released after they reach the appropriate age and complete all necessary health and behavioural assessments.

Long-Term Goal of the Programme

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said the restoration project will continue as more animals become ready for release. The programme aims to establish a stable tiger population in the Ili River delta and the Southern Balkhash region over time.

Earlier, in September 2024, Kazakhstan also received two Amur tigers, Bogdan and Kuma, from the Netherlands as part of the Turan tiger restoration programme. Ecology Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev previously stated that the pair has not yet produced any offspring.
