A major political development has taken place in Cambodia as an appeals court has upheld the treason conviction of opposition leader Kem Sokha. The decision confirms his 27 year prison sentence, dealing another setback to the already weakened opposition in the country.
Kem Sokha, who is 72 years old, was found guilty of treason in 2023. He has been under house arrest since then. Authorities accused him of working with foreign powers to overthrow the government led by former prime minister Hun Sen.
The appeals court not only upheld the original sentence but also imposed an additional restriction. According to his lawyer, Kem Sokha will face a five year travel ban after completing his prison term, limiting his ability to leave the country in the future.
His legal team expressed disappointment with the ruling. His lawyer stated that the decision was not expected and called for national reconciliation. He suggested that the government should take steps to create unity rather than continue political divisions.
The case of Kem Sokha is considered one of the most significant examples of a broader crackdown on opposition figures in Cambodia. Over the past several years, many opposition leaders have been arrested, charged, or forced to leave the country.
The main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party, was dissolved by the courts in 2017. This decision came before an election in which the party was expected to challenge the ruling Cambodian People’s Party.
Since then, Cambodia has held elections where the ruling party has faced little to no serious competition. Many opposition members have been tried in court, often in their absence, and have received long prison sentences on charges such as treason and incitement.
International reactions to Kem Sokha’s case have been critical. Western countries and human rights groups have raised concerns about political freedom and fairness in the judicial process. Some have argued that the charges against him were politically motivated.
The current government, led by Hun Manet, has denied these accusations. Officials maintain that legal actions are based on the rule of law and that those convicted have violated national regulations.
The ruling highlights the ongoing political tensions in Cambodia and raises questions about the future of opposition politics in the country. Observers believe that without meaningful reforms, the political environment may remain heavily controlled.
