On Friday, the Recording Academy revealed the nominations for the 2026 Grammy Awards, showcasing an intensely competitive lineup. Kendrick Lamar stands out as the frontrunner, earning a total of nine nominations—mirroring his count from last year. Close in tow is Lady Gaga, who has received seven nominations, bringing both musicians back into the spotlight of this year’s awards discussion.
Both Lamar’s album GNX and Lady Gaga’s MAYHEM are contenders for the esteemed Album of the Year award. Despite multiple nominations in this prestigious category, neither artist has clinched a win for Album of the Year, heightening expectations for the upcoming gala. The ceremony is scheduled for February 1 in Los Angeles.
Industry insiders and experts seem to lean towards Lamar, with nominations across a multitude of categories, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. This extensive acknowledgment indicates robust support among the Recording Academy’s voting members. Billboard Awards editor Paul Grein believes that Kendrick Lamar could potentially make history as the first solo male rap artist to win Album of the Year, marking a significant achievement in Grammy history. Meanwhile, Grein points out that Lady Gaga is also a strong contender, often “in the conversation” for top accolades.
Other notable artists this year include Sabrina Carpenter and Bad Bunny, both of whom have six nominations each. Sabrina Carpenter’s album Man’s Best Friend has considerably enhanced her profile, solidifying her standing in pop music. Meanwhile, Puerto Rican sensation Bad Bunny has successfully ventured into major Grammy categories such as Album, Record, and Song of the Year. He’s also set to headline the Super Bowl halftime show next year, boosting his presence further.
Notably absent from this year’s nominations is Taylor Swift, the record holder for the most Album of the Year wins with four. Her recent project, The Life of a Showgirl, did not meet the eligibility requirements for this Grammy cycle and will instead be considered for next year’s awards.
This year, approximately 15,000 members of the Recording Academy will cast their votes. The nominees span a rich tapestry of genres and styles, reflecting the dynamic evolution of the music industry.
Enthusiasts and industry observers are keenly anticipating the Grammy Awards celebration, where winners will be recognized for their contributions to music over the past year.
