Punjabi pop icon Diljit Dosanjh has found himself facing threats from Khalistani extremists after recent events at his global concerts.
Concerts Raise Concerns
During his concert in Perth, pro-Khalistan slogans emerged, paralleling a threat issued by US-based Khalistani figure Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. His scheduled Auckland show in New Zealand has also been identified as a potential target by supporters hinting at disruptions.
In spite of these challenges, Diljit has kept his composure, actively engaging with fans. He expressed gratitude to his Adelaide audience for their unwavering support, encouraging everyone to focus on positivity rather than be affected by outside threats.
Understanding the Backlash
The threats against Diljit escalated post his appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, where he performed a respectful gesture by touching Amitabh Bachchan’s feet. This act incited backlash from Khalistani activists. Pannun and his organization, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ)—which is banned in India—issued a video denouncing the singer, alleging that he disrespected the victims of the 1984 Sikh genocide.
Pannun commented, "By touching the feet of Bachchan, whose words led to genocide, Diljit Dosanjh has insulted every victim, widow, and orphan of the 1984 Sikh Genocide."
The SFJ is classified as a banned organization in India, involved in activities deemed subversive to the country's integrity.
Diljit’s Affirmation of Peace
Diljit explained that his appearance on KBC was intended to raise funds and awareness for victims of floods in Punjab, and not for film promotion. At his Brisbane concert, he emphasized messages of love and unity:
"Always keep talking about love. For me, this earth is one. My Guru says, 'Ik Onkar.' There is only love from my side for everyone, even if someone gets jealous or trolls me. I will always spread the message of love."
He further encouraged individuals to concentrate on their own virtues and actions, leaving the outcomes to the divine, underscoring his dedication to positivity and compassion.
