Usman Khawaja Ruled Out of Second Gabba Test Due to Back Spasms

Usman Khawaja Ruled Out of Second Gabba Test Due to Back Spasms

Post by : Maya Rahman

Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja will not participate in the second Test at the Gabba, suffering from recurring back spasms that began during the opening match at Perth. Despite making a brief return to the nets for a 30-minute session, Khawaja hasn't achieved full recovery and will focus on rehabilitation alongside his teammates. A replacement for him has yet to be announced.

This situation opens the door for Travis Head to continue as an opener, especially after his impressive outing in Perth, where he scored 123 runs off 83 balls during the second innings. Other batting options in the squad include Josh Inglis, who recently scored a century against the England Lions, and Beau Webster, who narrowly missed the selection for Perth.

The third Test scheduled in Adelaide starts on December 17, providing Khawaja with two weeks to recuperate. Nonetheless, concerns arise about whether he’ll regain his place should Head and the other batsmen excel. Khawaja's performances have faced scrutiny lately, with an average of 31.84 since the 2023 Ashes and a single century in 45 innings.

Khawaja initially aggravated his injury on the opening day of the Perth Test. Following a quick collapse from England, he was unable to start at the top of the order. After batting at No. 4, he only managed 2 runs before being dismissed by Brydon Carse. On the second day, he took a catch at first slip but subsequently strained his back during another catching attempt, which set the stage for Head's outstanding innings.

This injury situation raises questions about Khawaja’s Test career, particularly if Head and other emerging players maintain high performance levels in his absence. The management team is closely monitoring his recovery before making decisions about future selections.

This scenario underscores the physical challenges posed by international cricket and the obstacles players face in returning from injuries under performance pressure. Khawaja's recovery and return to form in Adelaide are vital for determining his future role in the Australian Test squad and may affect his long-term prospects.

Khawaja's absence creates an opportunity for other players to solidify their standing, emphasizing the fierce competition for spots and the significance of fitness and form at the highest echelon of cricket.
