On Sunday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited an art studio to supervise the crafting of sculptures for a memorial dedicated to troops who died in combat abroad. According to state media, he stressed that the sculptures would commemorate the “legendary achievements” of these fallen soldiers and ensure their memory endures.
This memorial honors troops deployed under a military agreement with Russia, with an estimated 14,000 North Korean soldiers sent to support Russian efforts in Ukraine in 2024. Reports suggest that over 6,000 of these soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. Kim has repeatedly lauded their bravery, actively participating in memorial initiatives to celebrate their service.
The visit coincides with preparations for North Korea's Ninth Party Congress, anticipated to take place early next month. This congress is expected to detail the country’s key policies for the next five years and may feature a significant military parade. Analysts observe that the memorial initiative and the upcoming congress emphasize North Korea's commitment to military allegiance, national pride, and robust internal unity.
By emphasizing the sacrifices of these soldiers, Kim fortifies a narrative of valor and devotion to the state. This memorial project also underscores the importance of international military relationships and honoring those who serve the nation.
This endeavor illustrates how North Korea seeks to align its identity with military success, loyalty to the ruling party, and recognition of the contributions made by soldiers, especially in foreign conflicts.
