Kim Jong Un has been reappointed as President of the State Affairs Commission, the highest governing body of North Korea, following a session of the Supreme People's Assembly held in Pyongyang. The announcement was made by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The State Affairs Commission serves as the top policymaking authority in the country, and Kim’s reappointment reinforces his continued hold over the nation’s political and military leadership. According to official reports, the decision reflects the “unanimous will” of the people, a common narrative in North Korean state media.
Kim Jong Un, who has been in power since 2011 following the death of his father Kim Jong Il, represents the third generation of leadership in the ruling family founded by Kim Il Sung in 1948. His leadership continues to shape the country’s domestic and foreign policies, particularly in areas related to nuclear development and regional security.
The reappointment comes after the election of hundreds of deputies to the Supreme People's Assembly, where voter turnout was officially reported to be near total participation. However, international observers and analysts have long criticised North Korea’s electoral process, noting that it typically involves a single approved candidate per seat, limiting genuine political competition.
Experts suggest that the latest assembly session could also consider key policy decisions, including potential constitutional amendments that may further define North Korea’s stance on inter-Korean relations. The development highlights the tightly controlled political structure of the country, where leadership continuity remains a central feature of governance.
