S Korea Ex First Lady Sentence Increased

S Korea Ex First Lady Sentence Increased

Post by : Shakul

A major legal development has taken place in Seoul, where former first lady Kim Keon Hee has received a significantly increased prison sentence. The appeals court raised her jail term to four years, doubling the earlier sentence of 20 months.

The court found her guilty of stock price manipulation and bribery, overturning a previous acquittal related to stock manipulation charges. Judges stated that her involvement in manipulating shares of a local car company constituted a serious violation of financial laws.

In its ruling, the court also imposed a fine of ₩50 million, highlighting the seriousness of the offences. Officials noted that her actions had damaged public trust and undermined transparency in governance.

Kim Keon Hee had earlier been sentenced to 20 months in prison in January for accepting luxury gifts, which were considered bribes. She had filed an appeal in an attempt to clear her name, while prosecutors also appealed, arguing the punishment was too lenient.

The court stated that she failed to acknowledge her wrongdoing and instead continued to offer excuses. This was cited as a key reason for increasing the sentence.

The case has drawn widespread attention in South Korea, especially due to her position as the wife of former president Yoon Suk Yeol. The verdict is seen as a strong message against corruption at high levels of power.

Legal experts say the ruling reflects a strict stance on financial crimes and public accountability. The case continues to spark debate on political ethics and judicial independence in the country.
